New Zealand Expands Māori Ta Moko Education

In Auckland and Rotorua, Māori tattooists are holding workshops to teach the deep genealogical meanings behind ta moko designs. Before getting tattooed, participants sit through lessons on whakapapa (lineage) and the spiritual responsibilities of wearing moko.

These educational practices ensure that tattoos remain sacred and not reduced to fashion. Leaders say the effort strengthens Māori identity and also teaches outsiders to approach indigenous body art with respect.
