Surge in Tattoo Parlours and Mental-Health Benefits in the UK

The UK is witnessing a dramatic boom in its tattoo industry. Over the last decade, tattoo parlours have more than doubled—from 1,637 to 3,394—and about one-third of UK adults (approximately 14 million people) now sport tattoos. Beyond aesthetics, tattoos are increasingly seen as therapeutic tools—helping individuals process trauma, grief, anxiety, and self-image issues. However, this boom has also fueled concerns about unlicensed artists (“scratchers”), with up to 40% of people considering removal due to regret or poor results.
