What’s happening: A viral social media trendespecially on TikTok has teens creating “tattoos” by applying tape, stickers, or sunscreen on their skin and intentionally sunburning the uncovered areas to leave a design once the covering is removed .

Health risks:

Dermatologists warn this causes real damage sunburn represents a skin injury caused by UV exposure, which damages DNA, accelerates aging, and increases the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers .

Even a single blistering sunburn or just five before age 18 can double the lifetime risk of developing melanoma .

The trend is fueling a dangerous cycle of cumulative UV damage, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and potential long-term harms .

Expert advice: Rather than scolding, parents are encouraged to have open, nonjudgmental conversations. Dermatologists recommend safer alternatives like spray-on “tattoos,” body paints, or metallic temporary designs—and encourage consistent sunscreen habits as a daily routine .
