In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through the college football world, Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire has announced his immediate retirement, citing a serious health concern as the reason behind his abrupt departure.

In an emotional press conference held Tuesday morning at the Jones AT\&T Stadium, McGuire, 54, revealed that he has been diagnosed with a rare cardiac condition that requires urgent treatment and long-term rest.
“This is not the ending I ever envisioned,” McGuire said, holding back tears. “But after consulting with my doctors, my family, and the university, stepping away from football is the only option that ensures I can be here for my loved ones in the long run.”
McGuire, who took over the Texas Tech program in 2021, brought a new energy to the Red Raiders. Under his leadership, Tech recorded back-to-back bowl victories and revitalized recruiting across the state of Texas. His passionate sideline demeanor and deep ties to Texas high school football made him a fan favorite and a respected figure across the Big 12.
Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt expressed deep gratitude for McGuire’s contributions. “Joey is more than a coach — he’s a leader, a mentor, and a friend. His health and family come first, and we fully support his decision.”
Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter will serve as interim head coach as the university begins a national search for McGuire’s successor.
Joey McGuire leaves the program not only with a winning record, but with a lasting legacy of toughness, integrity, and heart — the very traits that now lead him into this next battl
e off the field.
