South Korea Considers Legalizing Tattoo Industry

In South Korea, where tattooing has long existed in a legal gray area, lawmakers are debating whether to fully legalize and regulate the profession. Currently, only licensed medical practitioners can legally perform tattoos, yet thousands of underground studios thrive across Seoul and other major cities.

Supporters of legalization argue that regulation would improve hygiene standards, protect customers, and help artists work openly without fear of fines. Tattoo culture in South Korea has been booming among young people, influenced by K-pop idols and athletes proudly displaying their ink. Critics, however, worry about traditional values clashing with the fast-growing industry.
