A university in Tokyo has announced a groundbreaking anthropology program dedicated to studying tattoos across cultures. The course examines Japan’s own irezumi tradition, as well as Polynesian, African, and Native American tattoo practices, connecting body art with history, religion, and social identity.
Professors say the program is designed to give students a deeper understanding of how tattoos act as cultural language, carrying meanings far beyond fashion.
