Japan Universities Explore Tattoo History in New Course

Several Japanese universities have introduced a new course exploring the history of tattoos, from traditional irezumi to modern body art. Professors say the program helps students understand how tattoos shaped Japanese culture while also challenging social taboos.

International students are also joining the course, comparing Japanese tattoo traditions with those from Polynesia, Africa, and Europe. Alongside cultural lessons, health experts are invited to discuss safe tattoo practices in a global context.

Educators believe the course will promote both cultural respect and informed awareness for students worldwide.
