SOUTH BEND, INDIANA  In a historic and celebratory moment for the University of Notre Dame, the Notre Dame Marching Band has been officially recognized as the “most unique” marching band in the world by both ESPN and Guinness World Records.

This prestigious honor was announced during a nationally televised segment on ESPN, followed by formal confirmation from Guinness World Records. The award celebrates not only the band’s extraordinary musical excellence but also its innovative performances, rich history, and cultural impact.

Founded in 1845, the Notre Dame Band is the oldest university marching band in continuous existence in the United States. Over the decades, it has developed a reputation for blending tradition with creativity — incorporating dramatic formations, genre-crossing music selections, and collaborations with diverse artists and student groups.

The recent recognition stemmed from a landmark performance during the 2024 football season, where the band combined classical music with modern hip-hop choreography, synchronized drone lighting, and live storytelling. The performance went viral, attracting millions of views online and garnering widespread acclaim from musicians, fans, and cultural critics alike.

“This honor is a testament to the spirit, hard work, and innovation of our students,” said Dr. Kenneth Dye, Director of Bands at Notre Dame. “We’ve always believed in pushing boundaries while staying true to our traditions.”

University President Rev. John I. Jenkins also praised the band, noting, “The Notre Dame Band exemplifies what it means to be a force for good — uniting people through music, creativity, and joy.”

As the band prepares for another electrifying season, fans can expect even more boundary-breaking performances. With this global recognition, the Notre Dame Marching Band has firmly secured its place as a symbol of artistic excellence and school pride on the world stage.
