Virginia Tech officially landed a commitment from in-state offensive tackle Buddy Wegdam (6′ 6″, 280 lb) of Woodberry Forest School (Central Virginia) for the 2026 class

. Wegdam chose VT over ACC rival N.C. State, Michigan State, and Duke, marking the second homegrown commitment in the 2026 cycle and the fifth overall

Coming off a strong junior season, Wegdam impressed VT coaches with his ideal blend of size, athleticism, and upside. With his frame, he’s expected to add bulk before reporting to Blacksburg. He becomes the first high-school offensive lineman recruited by the Hokies relative newcomer at OL coach, Matt Moore, who arrived in December and already added multiple linemen via the transfer portal from his West Virginia roots

Wegdam joins a growing and locally anchored 2026 class featuring fellow Virginians: linebacker Joshua Pittman and edge rusher Kamren Johnson

. Virginia Tech’s emphasis on Commonwealth recruiting is paying dividends, reinforcing a strong foundation of local talent.

This pick-up follows a recent departure of WR Carnell Warren, but VT responded quickly, adding three new class members, including Buddy. His addition strengthens depth and competition on the offensive front—a key area for VT’s ongoing rebuild under new staff

In-state boost: Securing a top Virginia offensive lineman enhances VT’s regional recruiting momentum.

Coaching momentum: This is a vote-of-confidence for coach Matt Moore—his first high-school OL recruit since joining the program.

Roster building: With five commitments already, the 2026 class is taking shape early, blending in-state talent with portal additions.

Buddy Wegdam’s decision offers both immediate recruiting impact and long-term roster stability. With his size and potential, he’s poised to be a foundational piece

of the Hokies’ offensive line in the next few years.
