South Bend, IN – June 13, 2025 In a historic and unprecedented moment for collegiate music, the Notre Dame Marching Band (NDMB), affectionately known as the Band of the Fighting Irish, has been officially named the world’s top marching band by ESPN.
The recognition follows a highly competitive two-day international showdown featuring elite marching ensembles from across the globe. The event, held at a neutral venue and judged by a panel of music experts, choreographers, and fan votes, tested bands on precision, musicality, visual impact, and innovation.
The NDMB’s breathtaking performance featured a meticulously choreographed medley that fused traditional Notre Dame fight songs with symphonic rock, accompanied by bold formations and technical prowess. The crowd erupted in applause as the final whistle blew, and ESPN declared their victory as “a landmark achievement in musical pageantry.”
“This is more than a win for Notre Dame; it’s a moment for the entire collegiate marching community,” said Dr. Kenneth Dye, Director of Bands at Notre Dame. “Our students poured heart, discipline, and creativity into every beat. We are deeply honored by this recognition.”
Founded in 1845, the NDMB is the oldest university marching band in continuous existence and has performed at every home football game since 1887. Known for its commitment to excellence and tradition, the band has long been a source of pride for the university.
Fans and alumni around the world are celebrating the achievement. Social media exploded with congratulations and video clips of the performance, many calling it “legendary” and “goosebump-inducing.”
ESPN called the decision “historic,” marking the first time a college marching band has earned the title on a global stage. For the Band of the Fighting Irish, this crown symbolizes the culmination of nearly two centuries of excellence — and the start of a new chapter at the very top.
