sports. His comments come as Illinois updates its high school sports guidelines, requiring transgender athletes to seek approval before participating in postseason competitions.

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) recently revised its policy, mandating that student-athletes whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth must obtain an eligibility ruling to compete in single-sex sports during the postseason. This process involves reviewing medical and school records, along with statements affirming the athlete’s gender identity and letters of support from teachers, family, or clergy .

IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson stated that the updated guidelines aim to balance inclusivity with fair competition. “We want to try to be as inclusive as we can with students… at the same time protecting the integrity of competition,” Anderson said .

Urlacher’s stance aligns with a broader national debate intensified by recent federal actions. In February 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports, prompting organizations like the NCAA to adjust their policies accordingly .

Despite the heated discourse, data indicates that transgender participation in Illinois high school sports is minimal. Out of approximately 320,000 student-athletes, only three individuals assigned male at birth received waivers to compete in girls’ sports last year .

As the conversation continues, Urlacher’s comments reflect a growing call for clarity and consistency in policies governing transgender athletes, emphasizing the need to uphold fairness while navigating complex issues of identity and inclusion.
